We follow the rise of modern powers and the idea of nation-building. We will follow how Canada started to take shape from its Aboriginal and colonial origins, and the struggles for control that took place. We will think critically about changes in economy and technology, culture and geography, settlement and political control. The stories of the people in this course are very different from each other, and yet somehow these stories come together to set the stage for what would become Canada, both the problems and the possibilities.

Why Canada? The story of how Canada, once a loose collection of colonies and territory with conflicting cultures and histories, came to be a country is linked by the geographic, economic, political, social and technological changes that occurred from 1815-1914. Skills such as map literacy, critical thinking, effective research, current events, communication, and active citizenship will relate to many of the learning outcomes.

A Canadian Portage. The "problem" of Canadian Identity explored critically in many ways -- culture, history, geography, politics, and international context. In the middle of our course we work on the "Echo Project" -- heritage inquiry that connects students to a specific expression of this "problem." Big question: Why Bother Voting?

"Not all who wander are lost." Last year was the first time this senior humanities course had been taught anywhere. We examined diverse topics like mythology, fine arts, folk culture, language origins, cartography, literature, geography, and engaged in project-based learning to explore topics and themes in more depth. If there is enough interest we will offer it again for 2015/16, as well as GEOGRAPHY 12. The Middle Earth course page and course blog may convince you that it is worth it. If it does, stop by and let Mr. Thielmann know.
