New BC English/Language Arts Curriculum
Approaches to the Revised Curriculum
The new English/Language Arts curriculum, not unlike other areas of the redesigned BC curriculum, has both its lovers and haters. For example, I hear frustration from many English teachers with the 2 credit system in Grade 10 and the proliferation of choice, but an appreciation of the overall reduction of learning outcomes in each of the English courses and the usefulness of the Big Ideas. The renewed focus on the First Peoples Principles of Learning, and on the integrated and transferable approach to learning, are also intriguing for teachers; for some a new challenge or direction for their practice, while for others a reinforcement of what was already going well. My intention is to share the work being done by BC teachers to parse the redesigned curriculum and highlight promising examples of learning and assessment design, including sample course outlines and unit plans.
